The Tanzania Revenue Authority recorded a 19 percent increase in revenue collection for the financial year ending 30 June 2022, compared with the previous year. The growth was driven by new tax measures and a positive economic recovery, the Controller and Auditor General (CAG) said on Wednesday.

Presenting his audited reports for 2020/21 and 2021/22 at State House in Dar es Salaam, Charles Kichere noted that TRA’s revenue collections for 2021/22 totaled 20.94 trillion shillings. This figure represents a 19 percent rise over the prior year’s collection of 17.59 trillion shillings. However, Kichere pointed out that the amount fell short of the estimated target of 21.78 trillion shillings, leaving a deficit of 833 billion shillings, or 3.8 percent.

Regarding non‑tax income, the CAG observed that some institutions collected revenue outside the Government e‑Payment Gateway (GEPG), creating uncertainty about whether all income entered the government’s accounts. Notable examples include the Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), which collected approximately 68.24 billion shillings outside the system; the Information and Communication Technology Commission, with 151.54 billion shillings; and the prisons organization, with 900.69 million shillings.

The CAG also highlighted a loss of 41.48 billion shillings in revenue from a non‑collection fee for transporting overweight items, a fee approved by the Ministry of Works and Transport.
