Every year in Grace Valley Estate, a community in Ogun State, floods sweep away children whenever it rains. Witnesses say that at least nine pupils have died as a result of these floods.

A resident, Happiness Ogwe, recounted how the flood carried a young boy in a school uniform while he was returning from school. The victim’s brother initially dismissed the news, saying such incidents “usually happen,” unaware that the boy was his own sibling. When he could not find his brother at home or at church, he went to the site of the incident. There, a woman told him that the person who had fallen into the canal was his younger brother, Prince.

The victim’s uncle identified the location as Estate Bus Stop, Abule‑Ojo Fourth Gate, a spot where such incidents frequently occur. Another resident disclosed that the community has been experiencing these floods since 2005 and has appealed to the state governor for assistance.
