No fewer than 176,408 candidates participated in the 2023 mock Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday, nationwide. The mock UTME, originally scheduled for Thursday, March 16, 2023, was postponed to Thursday, March 30, 2023, due to a change in the date of the governorship and state house of assembly elections, which were moved from Saturday, March 11, 2023, to March 18, 2023.
Dr. Fabian Benjamin, JAMB’s spokesperson, explained that the mock UTME is an optional examination introduced to give candidates hands‑on experience with the system and to allow the Board and its partners to assess their readiness for the main UTME. The main examination is slated to take place between April 29 and May 12, 2023.
Benjamin also announced that this year’s UTME will feature groundbreaking innovations aimed at addressing previous infractions and centre failures. For example, under the new regime, if a session is delayed by up to one hour before its commencement, that session will be cancelled and rescheduled. He confirmed that a total of 176,408 candidates registered to sit for the 2023 mock UTME.
