Luanda — The Angolan company National Electricity Transport Network (RNT‑EP) and the Mozambican Electricity Network (EDM) signed a cooperation agreement on Wednesday in Luanda. The pact is part of Angola’s preparations to enter the electricity supply market for countries of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).
According to RNT’s press office, the three‑year agreement, with an option for renewal, aims to strengthen existing relationships and facilitate the exchange of experience in SADC integration, business cooperation, and interconnection with the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP). The protocol was signed by RNT CEO Rui Gourgel and EDM Chairman Marcelino Gildo Alberto.
The agreement covers a wide range of activities, including training of personnel, prevention and security measures, planning and project management, design, construction, renewal and implementation of works. It also provides for exchanges in electricity markets, exploitation, equipment management, administration, finance and general services.
RNT CEO Rui Gourgel said the agreement will help prepare management teams for the regional energy‑supply market, ensuring a smooth entry without difficulties. EDM Chairman Marcelino Gildo Alberto noted that the Mozambican company already operates in the regional market through agreements with counterparts in South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe, and by supplying surplus electricity. He added that Angola, with a surplus of about 3.5 GW, has the potential to join this market, while EDM derives 20 % of its revenue from electricity sales to Southern African countries.
