A medical doctor, Kadev Kenneth Kelvin, has been remanded at the Federal Correctional Facility in Makurdi on allegations of cyber‑stalking. The remand was ordered by a Benue State Magistrate Court sitting in Makurdi, the state capital.
According to the police’s first information report, on 13 March 2023 a criminal petition was filed with the Commissioner of Police by D.K Iorhemba & Co., Barristers and Solicitors, on behalf of Bemgba Iortyom, the PDP Publicity Secretary for Benue State. The petition alleged that Dr. Kelvin, who works at Kadev Health Systems Services, No. 9 opposite Holy Covenant, Otukpo Road, Makurdi, had posted a damaging comment on Facebook on 12 March 2023 at about 11 p.m. while chatting with Gabriel Terungwa Shange. In the post, he wrote: “My brother, if Bemgba Iortyom wants to go dirty, just inform me; the day he found out that I was the medical doctor who stitched his lacerated anus when he was sodomized in Abuja prison in 2017, he blocked me.”
Following an investigation, police arrested Dr. Kelvin, captured a screenshot of the Facebook statement as evidence, and obtained his confession. The police indicated that the offence contravenes section 24(1)(a)(b)(i) of the Cyber Crimes Prohibition and Prevention Act, 2015.
When the case was presented before the magistrate, no plea was entered due to a lack of jurisdiction. Police prosecutor Inspector S. O. Itodo informed the court that the investigation was still ongoing and requested a further date to allow the prosecution to prove its case.
