Following my update to the media on 24 March 2023 regarding the SA Tourism and Tottenham Hotspur FC sponsorship proposal, I received a response from the SA Tourism Board Chairperson on Wednesday, 29 March 2023. In the chairperson’s letter, the board confirmed that, based on the advice I had publicly given—that the deal should not proceed—it has decided not to move forward with the proposal. Consequently, the SA Tourism Board will not pursue the transaction nor seek the requisite approvals.

As I have repeatedly emphasized, the current economic climate demands careful consideration of public funds. Any department must fulfill its mandate in a cost‑effective manner, exploring multiple options and weighing all priorities. Justification for significant spending must align with the broader economic context of our country.

I look forward to continuing my engagement with SA Tourism’s board and executive management, as I have done during my first two weeks in office, and to working with them and the Department of Tourism on strategic actions that will enhance South Africa’s global standing as a premier tourist destination. I will also maintain detailed discussions with SA Tourism and the department about the budget to ensure we meet our mandate of growing visitor numbers, supporting sector growth, increasing job creation, and boosting the tourism sector’s contribution to the economy.

It is my hope that future proposals will be discussed promptly so that the department, SA Tourism, and I can collaborate from the outset, seeking advice and support while adhering to all due processes and legislative requirements. This matter is now concluded, and we will continue to work together to explore all avenues, create an environment conducive to private‑sector investment, and align government initiatives within the legislative framework to grow tourism, welcome more visitors to our beautiful country, and create more jobs in the sector.
