The Peoples Democratic Party (South‑South Zone) has resolved to establish a committee to appraise and review the performance and outcomes of the recently concluded general elections across the South‑South states. In its communique, the party also recommended the creation of a truth and reconciliation committee to foster lasting peace and unity for the party’s progress and growth.
The Zonal Working Committee meeting, held in Port Harcourt and presided over by National Vice Chairman (South) Dan Orbih, endorsed the sacking of the party’s national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, by Justice W. I. Kpochi of the Benue State High Court in Makurdi. The court ordered Ayu’s removal and appointed the Deputy National Chairman (North), Alhaji Iliya Umar, as acting national chairman. The communique, signed by Publicity Secretary Etim Ante, was obtained by journalists in Abuja on Friday and also supported the PDP National Working Committee’s decision to reverse an earlier suspension of prominent leaders and members that had been carried out without due process.
Justice Kpochi had issued an interim injunction in suit No. MHC/85/2023, filed by Terhide Utaan against Ayu and the PDP, restraining Ayu from presenting himself as national chairman and adjourned the case to April 17 for further hearing. Previously, the PDP had suspended former Ekiti governor Ayo Fayose, former Senate President Anyim Pius Anyim, former Katsina governor Ibrahim Shema, Benue state chieftain Prof. Dennis Ityavyar, and Dr. Aslam Aliyu of Zamfara State. After an extensive review of party affairs, the PDP National Working Committee reversed these suspensions with immediate effect, in accordance with the party’s constitution as amended in 2017.
At the well‑attended Zonal Working Committee meeting on Thursday, March 30, the South‑South PDP congratulated its newly elected governors, senators, House of Representatives members, and State House of Assembly members. The communique praised the “commendable efforts of all our party leaders, stakeholders and the entire party faithful for winning many of the contested seats” and reiterated support for the National Working Committee’s handling of Dr. Ayu’s suspension and Alhaji Iliya Umar’s assumption of the acting chairmanship. It also called for an amicable resolution of lingering crises within the party and reiterated the recommendation to set up a truth and reconciliation committee to achieve lasting peace and unity for the party’s continued growth.
