The death of Kambilichukwu, the first son of Yul and May Edochie, shocked many on Thursday. The 16‑year‑old reportedly suffered a seizure while playing football with his schoolmates after their examinations and died. As family members and friends continue to grieve, psychologist Johnbosco Chukwuorji has offered coping strategies.

Speaking to Saturday Beats, Chukwuorji said, “I extend my deepest condolences to the entire Edochie family on the unexpected demise of the young boy. It is very painful to lose a son, but it has happened, and the family must face this reality. There is no right way to grieve.” He emphasized the importance of staying connected and communicating, noting that the couple’s relationship is already strained and could be further tested by the tragedy. “To cope, they must accept what they cannot change,” he added.

Chukwuorji, a senior lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, explained the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. “The first four stages are negative and unhelpful; the last stage is the most constructive. When acceptance arrives, one realizes the incident has occurred and can begin to find ways to move forward.” He urged others to reach out with understanding, avoid digging up past marital issues on social media, and offer words of comfort and personal coping experiences. He also recommended that the family seek support from religious leaders and draw closer to God if they are spiritual. “The couple should not stay apart; staying together will help them cope during this trying period,” he advised.

Although Yul and May have not posted about their son’s death, colleagues have expressed their sympathy. Actress Georgina Onuoha wrote on Instagram, “Please say a word of prayer for May Yul‑Edochie and her babies. Words are truly inadequate to express this level of grief. No mother or parent should ever have to endure this trauma of losing a child. I still can’t believe this.” Actress Uche Ogbodo posted, “This is so heartbreaking. I have been so mystified since morning. Rest in peace, little one. Yul Edochie and May, my prayers are with you.” Actress Iyabo Ojo added, “God, please take control, please comfort them, Lord. Yul and May Edochie, you are in my prayers. I am so sorry for this great loss.”

Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer Ben Hundeyin confirmed that Edochie has filed a police report regarding the incident.
