Real Madrid faced a setback in their pursuit of consecutive La Liga titles after losing 2-1 to Villarreal in an entertaining and controversial match. The defending champions missed an opportunity to ascend to the top of the La Liga table with either a win or a draw. Villarreal, led by Samuel Chukwueze, was undeterred by the packed crowd at their renovated El Madrigal home, launching an aggressive attack against Real Madrid from the outset. This victory not only boosts Villarreal’s confidence but also strengthens their hopes of securing a top-four finish and a UEFA Champions League berth.

In a historic moment for Real Madrid, the team started the match without a Spanish player for the first time in their competitive history. Despite this, they are assured of remaining in second place in the La Liga standings as they prepare to watch leaders Barcelona face Atletico Madrid on Sunday. If Barcelona wins, they will extend their lead at the top of the table to three points. Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno played a pivotal role in the match, scoring a goal and providing an assist, which helped his team earn the well-deserved three points.

Real Madrid struggled to find their attacking rhythm, a challenge compounded by Villarreal’s strong defensive performance. The match was further complicated by referee Cesar Soto Grado’s decisions, as he awarded two penalties within four minutes during the second half, both of which were contentious. The first penalty for Real Madrid appeared to result from a minimal touch by Juan Foyth that had little effect on the ball’s trajectory. The second penalty was awarded against Real Madrid’s David Alaba, who seemed to be bracing himself to avoid falling. Both penalties were converted, impacting the match’s outcome.

As Real Madrid looks to move past this defeat, they are set to compete in the Spanish Supercopa starting midweek. Meanwhile, Villarreal will host Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey Round of 16 before traveling to face Celta Vigo on Friday.
