Felicia Ohanaga, a resident of Ozoro in the Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, is pleading for help as her 17‑year‑old brother Daniel faces the amputation of his right leg due to cancer. The tragedy began in 2019 when Daniel and their mother were riding a bike when a car struck them. Their mother died instantly, and Daniel sustained a serious leg injury.
After the accident, the family, who earn a living by rearing pigs and farming, sold one pig to cover Daniel’s initial medical expenses. They were later advised to seek treatment at a herbal centre, where leaves were applied to his wound and he was given herbal drinks. Instead of healing, the leg began to decay. “I told the practitioner his treatment was ineffective, but he insisted my brother would be fine,” Felicia recalled. When Daniel’s condition worsened, they returned to the hospital, where doctors informed them that amputation was necessary.
At the Federal Medical Centre in Asaba, Dr. Godwin Onakomene confirmed that Daniel had an undiagnosed osteosarcoma, a deadly bone cancer that had progressed beyond osteonecrosis. “The only way to save his life is to amputate the leg as soon as possible,” the doctor said, estimating the cost of the operation at N600,000.
Since the accident, Felicia’s family has sold most of their six pigs to afford food and medical care, leaving only two animals. She has managed to raise N70,000 through farming and selling cassava, but still needs N530,000 to fund the surgery. Felicia urges the public to contribute and help prevent further deterioration of her brother’s health.
