Professor Rufai Alkali, the National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has tendered his resignation. In a letter addressed to the party’s National Secretary, Alkali explained that his decision was driven by the need to make room for fresh leadership to build on the successes achieved during his brief tenure.

The letter, titled “Letter of stepping aside from the post of National Chairman, New Nigeria Peoples Party,” states: “I am pleased to write and convey to you that I have stepped aside as the National Chairman of the New Nigeria Peoples Party with effect from today, Friday, March 31, 2023.” He reflected on the recent general elections held on February 25 and March 18, 2023, asserting that the NNPP has great potential to become the leading political force capable of winning the presidential and other elections in 2027. “To achieve this, we must think ahead and plan ahead. And the time is now,” he wrote, emphasizing the need for major structural and systemic changes at all levels of the party to strengthen its base, improve operational capabilities, and enhance its competitive advantage over the other 17 parties on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s roll.

Alkali expressed confidence in the party’s leader, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, noting that “no sacrifice is too much from each and every one of us” in the pursuit of a better Nigeria. Concluding that the change must begin with him, he said, “I have decided, with all sense of responsibility, to step aside from the office of the National Chairman of our party to give room for fresh hands to take over and build upon our modest contributions.” He affirmed that he remains a bona‑fide member of the NNPP and pledged to continue supporting the party at all levels.

In his letter, Alkali extended special appreciation to the party’s National Leader and presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso; the vice‑presidential candidate, Bishop Isaac Idahosa; Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Chief Boniface Aniebonam; Secretary of the Board of Trustees, Buba Galadima; members of the National Working Committee; governorship and National/State House of Assembly members; and all party members nationwide for their goodwill, support, and encouragement during his tenure. He concluded with a prayer for blessings on the party and the nation: “Long live the New Nigeria Peoples Party. Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

The letter, dated Thursday, March 31, 2023, was copied to National Leader and presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso, Chairman of the Board of Trustees Boniface Aniebonam, and Secretary of the Board of Trustees Buba Galadima.
