Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on Monday establishing a special fund to support soldiers fighting in Ukraine and their families. The decree, titled “Defenders of the Fatherland,” was published on the official government website and outlines measures “aimed at ensuring a decent life” for those involved in the Ukraine offensive, as well as for their partners and children.
Russia rarely provides estimates of its losses in the military operation launched in February 2022, which has seen a series of setbacks for its armed forces. In February, almost a year after deploying troops to Ukraine, Putin announced the support measure to the Federal Assembly. He said, “Our duty is to support the families that have lost their loved ones and to help them raise their children, give them an education and a job.”
According to the decree, the fund will deliver targeted, personalized assistance to the families of fallen fighters and to veterans of the special military operation. AFP.
