FIFA announced on Monday that it had withdrawn the 2023 Under‑17 World Cup from Peru because the host nation could not meet its commitments to complete the required infrastructure. Despite this setback, the governing body confirmed that the 24‑team tournament will still take place on the scheduled dates, November 10 to December 2, and that a new host will be designated in due course.
The biennial competition was originally slated for Peru in 2021, but it was cancelled due to the COVID‑19 pandemic. Brazil served as the host and champion in 2019. In its statement, FIFA noted that, although it has enjoyed a very positive working relationship with the Peruvian Football Federation, there is now insufficient time to secure the necessary investment and finish the required work with the Peruvian government before the tournament’s start date. The organization added that it remains open to organizing a future competition in Peru.
Last week, FIFA also withdrew the Under‑20 World Cup, scheduled for May 20 to June 11, from Indonesia after governors of two Indonesian provinces sought to ban Israel, which had qualified for the tournament for the first time.
