Manchester United have reached an agreement to sign Real Madrid midfielder Carlos Casemiro in a deal reportedly worth up to £60 million ($70 million). According to Media Talk Africa, the Red Devils, currently at the bottom of the Premier League, announced this development in a statement released on their official website on Friday. The club specified that the transfer is contingent upon the agreement of personal terms, UK visa requirements, and a medical examination.
The statement from Manchester United expressed their delight at reaching an agreement with Real Madrid for Casemiro’s transfer. It noted that the initial payment would be £50 million, with the total fee potentially increasing by an additional £10 million if certain contractual clauses are fulfilled. Casemiro has been offered a four-year contract, which includes an option for a further 12-month extension, pending the agreement of personal terms.
United manager Erik ten Hag has been eager to secure a defensive midfielder since taking over at Old Trafford. After unsuccessful attempts to sign Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong, he has now turned to Casemiro. The 30-year-old Brazilian joined Real Madrid from Sao Paulo in 2013 and has been instrumental in the club’s success, winning five Champions League titles.
While Ten Hag refrained from discussing the transfer during his press conference earlier on Friday, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti provided more insight. He revealed that he spoke with Casemiro that morning and acknowledged the player’s desire for a new challenge. Ancelotti emphasized the club’s respect for Casemiro’s decision, expressing gratitude for his contributions and noting that they have replacements ready within the squad.
Real Madrid announced plans to hold a tribute and farewell for Casemiro on Monday, which will be attended by the club’s president, Florentino Perez. In their statement, the Spanish giants described him as one of the most significant players during a highly successful period in the club’s history. Casemiro has previously played alongside current United stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane in Madrid.
Given his extensive experience and success at the highest level, Casemiro is expected to become a key starter in central midfield, likely replacing either Fred or Scott McTominay. However, he may not be available for United’s upcoming match against arch-rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Monday. Instead, his debut could occur during the Premier League match against Southampton on August 27.
