The Independent Broadcasting Association of Nigeria (IBAN) has asked the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for clarification on the decision to impose a N5 million fine on Channels Television. In a statement co‑signed by IBAN chairman Guy Murray‑Bruce and General Secretary Charles Maraizu Daniels, the association said there appears to be no clear procedure for handling cases when broadcasters are notified of a breach of any broadcast code or regulation related to public service.
IBAN emphasized that it seeks an explanation of how NBC arrived at the recent sanction, stressing the need for open, transparent and fair disciplinary processes. “We take our responsibility as broadcasters seriously because we understand the enormity of the public service we undertake, provide and invest in,” the statement added.
The association also requested an audience with NBC, noting that a corporate and professional engagement would deepen mutual understanding and interest in the industry. It recalled that NBC had imposed the N5 million fine on Channels Television over comments made by Labour Party vice‑presidential candidate Datti‑Baba Ahmed, who appeared on a programme hosted by the station.
