The Labour Party’s candidate for the February 25 presidential election, Peter Obi, has asserted that his campaign before the 2023 general election was not based on ethnicity or religion. He made this statement, which he signed on Tuesday, in response to allegations made by Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed. At a media briefing in Washington, D.C., Mohammed accused Obi of treason, an accusation the Labour Party candidate described as part of a campaign of calumny against him.

Obi called the accusations “malicious and fictitious,” noting that it is “most unfortunate” that such efforts to misrepresent him are coming from high‑level officials. He emphasized that he has never discussed or encouraged anyone to undermine the Nigerian state, nor has he sponsored or preached any action against it. According to Obi, those initiating these attacks have increasingly used their official positions and agents to make false allegations against him.

He reiterated that he has always advocated for peace and an issue‑based campaign, never campaigning on ethnic or religious lines. Committed to due process, Obi said he is presently seeking redress in court. The former governor of Anambra State urged those engaged in this “demarketing process” to stop presenting Nigeria in a negative light, adding that future generations deserve a new Nigeria where they can live securely and decently, just like their counterparts elsewhere.
