Legislators Allan Ssewanyana (Makindye East) and Muhammad Ssegirinya (Kawempe South) returned to Parliament on Tuesday afternoon to resume their legislative duties after two years of incarceration. Upon entering the parliamentary precinct, the two MPs knelt at the entrance of the chambers and prayed silently while cameras and onlookers watched.
Ssewanyana expressed his happiness at being back and said he looked forward to contributing to debates for the benefit of his constituents, particularly through the Landlords/Tenants Bill, which directly affects those he represents. Both MPs later visited the office of the Leader of the Opposition to present themselves, insisting that they remain opposition members despite allegations that they struck a deal with the government to secure their release.
They were also required to report to the Speaker’s Office, where Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, speaking on behalf of the Speaker and the parliamentary administration, welcomed them and said he was glad they were back. The two legislators, along with several others, have been accused of orchestrating the machete attacks in Central Buganda; they were arrested, remanded, and released on bail last month.
