Aleksander Ceferin was re‑elected unopposed for a third term as president of UEFA at a meeting of the European football governing body in Lisbon on Wednesday. The 55‑year‑old Slovenian lawyer, first elected in 2016 after the downfall of Frenchman Michel Platini, will remain in the role until 2027.
Ceferin’s re‑election by acclamation follows his successful defence against the breakaway European Super League project during his second term. He will now oversee the introduction of a new Champions League format that begins next year. In addition, he will be able to focus on implementing new Financial Fair Play rules, which will require clubs to limit spending on player and staff wages, transfers and agents’ fees to 70 percent of total revenues by the 2025/26 season.
The UEFA Congress in the Portuguese capital took place just a few weeks after Gianni Infantino was re‑elected unopposed as president of FIFA, the sport’s world governing body.
