British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, expressed sadness at leaving the country after a “fabulous time” immersed in its music, dance and culture. Speaking to President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired) during a farewell visit at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, Laing said, “I’m sad to be leaving. Nigeria is so much fun, I had a fabulous time here, and I’ll be back. I love the dance, the music, the culture.” She added that she had visited more than 20 states and urged her successor to do the same, promising to return and continue traveling widely.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, released a statement titled “I had a fabulous time here, says British high commissioner in farewell visit to President Buhari,” confirming Laing’s remarks. She also congratulated President Buhari on a successful eight‑year tenure, praising his efforts to keep the country together.
President Buhari responded by noting that the United Kingdom feels like a second home to many Nigerians and affirmed that bilateral relations would remain strong. “In fact, some wealthy Nigerians don’t feel complete till they’ve had a home in the UK,” he said. He also mentioned his upcoming retirement in Daura, Katsina State, after handing over power on May 29, adding, “I’ll be as far away from Abuja as possible.” Buhari lauded the UK’s cooperation on numerous fronts, especially its role in rebuilding the North‑East, which has been devastated by insurgency.
