British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Catriona Laing, expressed sadness at leaving the country after a “fabulous time” engaging with its music, dance and culture. Speaking to President Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) during a farewell visit at the State House in Abuja on Wednesday, Laing said, “I’m sad to be leaving Nigeria; it’s so much fun; I had a fabulous time here, and I’ll be back. I love the dance, the music, the culture.” She added that she had visited more than 20 states and had urged her successor to do the same, promising to return and continue traveling widely.

Laing also congratulated President Buhari on a successful eight‑year tenure, noting his skill in keeping the country together. In response, Buhari highlighted the strong ties between the two nations, remarking that the United Kingdom feels like a second home to many Nigerians. “In fact, some wealthy Nigerians don’t feel complete till they’ve had a home in the UK,” he said, and affirmed that bilateral relations would remain robust.

The President also mentioned his upcoming retirement in Daura, Katsina State, after handing over power on May 29, stating, “I’ll be as far away from Abuja as possible.” He praised the UK for its cooperation on numerous fronts, especially in the reconstruction of the North‑East. The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, released a statement confirming these remarks.
