A bulldozer has demolished an illegal building that was erected under a power line near Hamed Adebowale Street in Aguda, Surulere Local Government Area, Lagos State. The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) carried out the demolition, citing safety concerns.
In a statement released on Thursday, General Manager Gbolahan Oki warned that the structure posed a serious hazard. “It is a disaster waiting to happen because of the electromagnetic waves from the power line, which may cause a fire outbreak,” he said. He explained that the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law prohibits owners or developers from constructing buildings beneath high‑power electricity cables and specifies the required distance between a property and public utilities such as PHCN power lines.
Oki emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of Lagosians by identifying and removing illegal and non‑conforming structures, especially those built under high‑tension wires. “The safety and protection of lives and property of the citizenry are paramount to the government,” he stated. “Owners and developers must ensure their buildings are not erected under power lines or high‑tension wires, as such illegality will not be condoned by the government.”
The agency pledged to intensify its efforts to eliminate illegal constructions and ensure compliance with state building codes. “LASBCA will intensify its effort to rid the state of illegality in the built environment by ensuring the state building codes are complied with,” the statement added.
