Commissioner of Police for Delta State Command, CP Muhammed Ali, announced that the Delta State Police have arrested Inspector Obi Abri for the murder of Onyeka Ibe at a checkpoint on Ugabolu‑Illah Road in the Asaba area. The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Edafe Bright, disclosed the development on Wednesday via a series of tweets. In a post titled “Alleged murder of one Onyeka Ibe,” Bright wrote that the police inspector has been identified, arrested, paraded and detained. He added that the command assures the public and the deceased’s family that justice will be served, that an investigation has begun, and that the suspect will be arraigned in court for prosecution.
Earlier, Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa ordered an investigation into the killing of the 26‑year‑old newly‑married Onyeka by a policeman. In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Olisa Ifeajika, the governor condemned the shooting that occurred during a stop‑and‑search operation along Illah Road. He urged residents not to take the law into their own hands and to allow the police to conduct a thorough probe into the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
According to Metro, Onyeka and his wife were traveling within the state when police stopped their vehicle at the checkpoint. After being asked for N100, Onyeka paid the amount. Inspector Abri then demanded additional money, which the 26‑year‑old refused to give. The dispute escalated, and Abri shot Onyeka in the head.
