The Northern Youth Council of Nigeria has warned that the federal government’s plan to remove the fuel subsidy will be met with resistance. In a statement delivered in Kaduna on Thursday, Council President Isa Abubakar expressed concern that the subsidy removal would further strain an already struggling economy and burden ordinary Nigerians. He cautioned that any palliative measures introduced to soften the impact could be siphoned off by corrupt individuals, citing the misappropriation of COVID‑19 intervention funds as an example.
Abubakar urged the government to reconsider its decision, arguing that eliminating the subsidy would only raise the cost of living for citizens who are already finding it difficult to make ends meet. He called for policies that create jobs and stimulate economic growth, emphasizing that the nation cannot afford another round of hardship, especially for the youth who face high unemployment and limited opportunities.
He warned of severe political consequences for those who push the subsidy removal, noting that powerful governors recently humbled in elections have shown that power now rests in the hands of the people. “Nigerians won’t forget,” he said.
The Northern Youth Council pledged to resist any attempt to scrap the fuel subsidy and appealed to other youth organisations across the country to join the fight in defense of the Nigerian people’s interests.
