Some gunmen killed a motorist on Thursday in Ado Ekiti, the capital of Ekiti State. The assailants caught up with the man in his car around the Irona area of the city. According to anonymous sources, the gunmen trailed the driver and attacked him when he became stuck in traffic. One source said, “It was as if he knew he was being trailed by the manner he drove to that point, but his assailants caught up with him in the traffic congestion, when he could no longer move.” The gunmen, dressed in black, dragged him from the car onto the ground and shot him dead. They then took a sack from his vehicle and fled in their own car. Nobody can say exactly what the bag contained—whether money or something else.
Another source, who claimed the deceased was also macheted by the attackers, said, “I cannot say whether the killers were armed robbers or cultists. But to me, it looks more like cult‑related.” The Police Public Relations Officer for the state, Sunday Abutu, confirmed the incident and said an investigation has begun. “We have received the information and the investigation has commenced to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those who perpetrated the act,” Abutu said. He added that the Commissioner of Police is urging anyone with useful information about this or other incidents in the state to contact his office or the nearest police station. The police spokesperson also confirmed that the victim’s body has been placed in the morgue.
