Men of the Ondo State Police Command on Thursday prevented students of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba‑Akoko, from protesting the death of a fellow student. The deceased, whose identity had not been confirmed at the time of this report, was allegedly stabbed to death by suspected cultists who are said to be indigenes of the community. The victim, who reportedly lived off‑campus, was killed on Thursday.

Angered by the incident, students took to the streets to protest. However, police officers deployed to the scene intervened to avert a crisis between the students and the town’s indigenes. Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, confirmed that the police were quickly dispatched to maintain law and order while an investigation began. She said the student was pronounced dead at the hospital where he was taken.

According to the PPRO, an indigene had a dispute with the student, which escalated to the stabbing and the student’s death. After the protest, the police moved the corpse to the morgue. Meanwhile, some individuals attempted to set fire to the suspect’s mother’s house; police and locals intervened to extinguish the blaze.
