Maputo — Health authorities report that about 92 percent of the target 1,277,539 people have been vaccinated against cholera in the central Mozambican provinces of Sofala, Manica and Zambezia. In the Thursday issue of the Maputo daily *Noticias*, Domingos Guihole, head of the Department of Health Surveillance, noted that Chimoio, the capital of Manica province, exceeded its goal by vaccinating over 310,000 people—102 percent of the target.
The vaccination campaign has concluded in Chimoio, Beira and Tete, but it continues in Marromeu district, on the south bank of the Zambezi, and in Quelimane, the capital of Zambezia province. Both locations are scheduled to finish the campaign on Thursday. In Marromeu, brigades are struggling to reach some areas because of torrential rains. Authorities say they will keep prioritising neighbourhoods with the highest cholera incidence and places with heavy foot traffic, such as markets and transport terminals. They will also coordinate with the education sector to ensure children are vaccinated in schools.
According to the latest Health Ministry statistics, 23,603 cholera cases have been reported since September 2022, resulting in 104 deaths and a lethality rate of 0.4 percent. Cases are still being reported from 40 districts, with Sofala and Tete provinces the most affected.
