The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has scheduled the local government elections for December 16, 2023. ODIEC Chairman Dr. Joseph Aremo announced the date at a stakeholders’ meeting in Akure, the state capital, on Friday. He explained that the commission began the election process by issuing a 360‑day notice to political parties and other stakeholders.
The commission has also released guidelines to ensure that grassroots democracy is protected. According to Aremo, registered political parties may collect nomination forms from ODIEC free of charge. The forms issued—EC009A, EC009B, EC009C, EC009D, and EC009E—cover the positions of chairmen, vice‑chairmen, and councilors.
Party primaries will be supervised by the commission from April 10 to June 10, 2023, as part of its statutory duties. Campaign activities by political parties are slated to begin on July 17 and run until midnight on December 14, 2023, in accordance with electoral law. Aremo praised the state government for its support and empowerment of the commission, reaffirming ODIEC’s commitment to conducting a free, fair, and credible election.
