Celta Vigo staged a dramatic late comeback to earn a 2‑2 draw against Sevilla, Manchester United’s Europa League opponents, in a La Liga match on Friday. The result kept Sevilla out of the relegation zone, where they sit provisionally 13th, five points clear despite having played one more game than the teams below them.
Sevilla’s advantage was short‑lived. After Pape Gueye was sent off for two yellow cards just 19 minutes into the game, the hosts fell behind to Youssef En‑Nesyri, who headed in from a Suso corner shortly before halftime. Marcos Acuña then doubled Sevilla’s lead with a powerful strike from distance nine minutes from time, after winning the ball in the centre circle and unleashing a rocket into the bottom corner. With a 2‑0 lead, Sevilla appeared poised for a comfortable victory ahead of their Europa League quarter‑final first leg against Manchester United at Old Trafford.
However, Celta Vigo fought back. Miguel Rodríguez pulled one back from the edge of the box in the 89th minute, and Gonzalo Paciencia equalised in the third minute of stoppage time, leaping to nod Hugo Mallo’s cross into the net. Late in the match Acuña was dismissed for dissent, leaving José Luis Mendilibar’s side with nine men.
The late goals forced a draw, denying Sevilla a second consecutive win under Mendilibar and leaving them still navigating a challenging season.
