Former Chelsea player Obi Mikel remains upbeat about the club’s prospects since Frank Lampard’s return as head coach. Speaking to Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport earlier this week, Mikel praised Lampard’s previous spell at Chelsea, noting that he “started really well” and was responsible for bringing players like Mason Mount to the team. “If you look at Frank and the way he’s been speaking since he came back, you can feel a little bit of hope and enthusiasm,” Mikel said.
However, Mikel expressed concern over the club’s ownership and their approach to player recruitment. “I don’t know if they’re making decisions right, but it just seems like they’re bringing in a lot of different players and it’s not working,” he warned.
Commenting on the sacking of former manager Graham Potter, Mikel questioned whether the job was too big for him. “Sometimes on the touchline it looked like he didn’t know what to do, he wasn’t communicating with the players or telling them what to do on the pitch,” Mikel observed. He added that Potter had been given ample time—seven months, with the club sitting around 11th place—but still felt the decision to dismiss him was justified. “He wasn’t a manager who was always motivated or passionate on the touchline. Players need a bit of a kick‑up‑the‑butt to wake up, and I wasn’t seeing that with Potter,” Mikel concluded.
