The Chadian government expelled German ambassador Jan‑Christian Gordon Kricke, citing his “impolite attitude.” In a statement on Saturday, a government spokesman said the decision was “motivated by the impolite attitude and the lack of respect for diplomatic customs by the German ambassador, as prescribed by the Vienna Convention.” No further explanation was provided, but local media suggest that Kricke’s criticism of the transitional government may have prompted the move. Kricke, who has served as Germany’s ambassador to Chad since 2021, was given 48 hours to leave the country.

Chad, an oil‑rich nation of 17 million people in the Sahel, has been governed by a transitional military administration led by President Mahamat Idriss Déby since April 2021. Déby assumed power after his father, long‑time ruler Idriss Déby, was killed by rebels attempting to overthrow the government. Although Déby pledged to hold democratic elections within a year and a half, those elections have been repeatedly postponed. Last autumn, opposition demonstrations were violently suppressed, drawing sharp criticism from many diplomats stationed in the country, which shares borders with Libya, Niger, Nigeria, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Sudan.
