Nairobi — Commonwealth Games champion Ferdinand Omanyala is set to kick off his busy outdoor season with four international races before returning home for next month’s Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi. He arrived in South Africa late last week for a training camp, marking the start of his outdoor campaign.
Omanyala will compete in two Grand Prix events organized by Athletics South Africa (ASA) on 12 April and 19 April. He will then take part in his first World Athletics Continental Gold Tour meet, the FNB Golden Grand Prix in Botswana, on 29 April. After that, he will travel to the United States to race at the Atlanta City Games on 6 May, before shifting his focus to the crowd‑pulling Kip Keino Classic at the Moi Sports Centre Kasarani on 13 May.
Speaking to Capital Sport from South Africa, Omanyala said, “So far, the outdoor training has been really okay. I have stepped up the training here in South Africa and I am looking forward to my first competitive outdoor race. I am feeling okay, I am feeling in shape and my target is to run under 10 seconds in all my races.” He added that he feels in the right shape and aims to lower his African record of 9.77 seconds at the Kip Keino Classic. “These four races will be a build‑up towards Kip Keino where my target will be a new African record. I believe I am in the right shape for it,” he said.
The 27‑year‑old also plans to compete in the Diamond League, which he views as an ideal preparation for the World Championships later in the year.
