Tunis, Tunisia — The National Salvation Front held a rally on Sunday outside the Municipal Theatre in Tunis, calling for the unification of opposition parties and the release of members who have been jailed. Front leader Néjib Chebbi told reporters that it is essential to bring together the parties occupying the opposition bench and to foster a dialogue that includes the Tunisian General Labour Union, the Tunisian League of Human Rights, the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights, and the Bar Association. He emphasized that such a dialogue is needed to address the country’s political and economic crisis and to agree on a roadmap capable of mobilising hundreds of thousands of Tunisians.
Chebbi argued that national unity is the only way out of the economic and financial crisis, adding that the President of the Republic has shut down all avenues for Tunisia to leverage external resources, leaving the country unable to pay its debts in the coming years. Front member and Ennahdha leader Riadh Chaibi said that rallies demanding the release of those jailed in the “plot against the State” case and the resumption of the political process after the “putsch” will continue until these demands are met and freedoms are restored. He noted that all political formations share the Front’s stance against the exceptional measures announced by President Kais Saied on 25 July 2021.
Front member Ajmi Lourimi stressed the importance of closing ranks to defend the achievements of the Revolution and to chart a path out of the economic crisis, warning that failure to do so could further isolate the country.
