President William Ruto spent the weekend at his Sugoi farm, where he drove a ploughing tractor in preparation for the planting season. Video and photos of the president operating the tractor quickly went viral on social media, and he used the moment to urge every individual to help curb food insecurity in Kenya.
Speaking later at a church service at AIC Fellowship in Eldoret, Ruto explained, “This Easter season, I decided to spend time here at home and also to supervise the planting on my farm.” He noted that Kenya, like many countries in the region, has faced an acute food shortage since last year due to the prolonged drought that hit the Horn of Africa.
“The cost‑of‑living debate in the country centers on food prices, and it ultimately comes down to what we do as farmers,” Ruto said. “As a farmer myself, I came down here to see how I can contribute to food production so we can reduce the cost of living.” He said his administration aims to double food production as part of its strategy to address rising living costs.
Ruto added that the Kenya Seed Company had sold an additional 200,000 kg of seeds, which would translate into roughly 200,000 extra acres under cultivation this year. He concluded that the solution to the food shortage is not to rely on imports but to ensure that Kenya produces enough food locally, emphasizing that the country has the capacity to do so.
