The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), described the late Prof. Nimi Briggs, former Vice Chancellor of the University of Port‑Harcourt, as an academic who lived for the good of the country and humanity. He also expressed his condolences to the professor’s surviving family, urging them to keep the emeritus’s legacy alive.

Buhari’s condolence message was issued in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled “President Buhari consoles family of late Emeritus Professor of Medicine, Prof Nimi Briggs, 79.” According to the family, Prof. Briggs died in the early hours of Easter Monday, 2023, at the age of 79.

Until his death, he had served as the 5th Vice Chancellor of the University of Port‑Harcourt, Pro‑Chancellor of Federal University, Abakaliki, Bayelsa Medical University, Yenagoa, and Chairman of the Committee of Pro‑Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.

In the statement, Adesina said the President “shares the pain of loss with family, friends and associates of the 5th Vice Chancellor of the University of Port‑Harcourt, Prof. Nimi Briggs, 79, extending sympathy to academia and Nigeria’s medical community.” He added that President Buhari noted the historic contributions of the scholar to national development, especially in education, and praised his distinguished service.

“The President believes the Emeritus Professor of Medicine lived for the good of the country and humanity, urging family and friends to immortalize his legacies,” the statement read. Buhari concluded by praying that God would grant the departed soul peaceful rest.
