Over one thousand rounds of ammunition were discovered in the Blagay Town community of Ganta, Nimba County, sparking unease among residents. The cache, consisting of 1,093 pieces of AK‑47 and GMG ammunition plus seven empty shells, was handed over to the Ganta police detachment. Police Commander Archie Dennis received the ammunition and shells.
The find was made by a 16‑year‑old boy who was cleaning the backyard of his parents’ home. Arlington Gbosue could not believe his eyes and immediately raised the alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents. The area is adjacent to the residence of notorious Ivorian armed robber Abu Weamie, who is currently detained at the Sanniquellie Center Prison in Sanniquellie City, Nimba.
The discovery has caused panic in Ganta City, prompting calls for a timely government investigation. The commercial district has recently suffered several armed robberies, with suspects arrested while in possession of automatic weapons and ammunition. Additionally, Liberian Joint Security forces stationed at the Ganta‑Guinea border have apprehended several individuals carrying single‑barrel guns and rounds.
Nimba County has a history of arms trafficking; it was the launching point of the 1989 rebel incursion led by former Liberian president Charles Taylor through the border town of Butuo. Similar caches have been uncovered in other parts of the country, including Lofa County, which was heavily contested by rival armed factions during the civil war.
