Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State has ordered a re‑assessment of Miss Precious Umoru so she can begin her training at the Edo State College of Nursing Sciences in Benin. Miss Umoru was admitted to the college, but after a preliminary evaluation of her physical condition—information that was not disclosed at the time of admission—she was initially advised to withdraw.
In a statement on Tuesday, the college’s provost, Prof. Patricia Ukaigwe, explained that the governor intervened upon learning of the case. He requested that a new assessment be conducted and that Miss Umoru receive all necessary support for her condition during the re‑assessment.
Prof. Ukaigwe noted that the Admission Committee had deemed Miss Umoru eligible based on her cognitive function and CBT exam score. However, when she arrived on campus, the hostel manager observed an unstable gait and tremors. A meeting was then convened between the college’s Counseling Department and Miss Umoru’s parents to review the nature and history of her condition and to reach a fair decision regarding her physical fitness for the rigorous midwifery training.
A preliminary assessment had suggested that she might not be able to withstand the physical demands of the program. The rescheduled assessment is set for Thursday, 13 April 2023, and the public will receive updates on the process. The provost assured that the college will not intentionally deny anyone the opportunity to receive top‑quality training and capacity enhancement in healthcare services.
