Erling Haaland celebrated the second goal as Manchester City took a commanding 3‑0 first‑leg lead over Bayern Munich in their Champions League quarter‑final on Tuesday. The Norwegian striker netted his 45th goal of the season, while Rodri and Bernardo Silva also found the back of the net for the English champions, who moved a giant stride closer to conquering Europe for the first time.
Bayern’s manager Thomas Tuchel, who out‑smarted Pep Guardiola when he was Chelsea’s coach in the 2021 final, faced the Englishman again in this heavyweight clash between two competition favourites. In 11 meetings, Guardiola has lost only three times, and this time he got the better of his German counterpart. Guardiola has often been criticised for over‑tinkering in the knockout stages, but it was Tuchel who made bold selection choices, leaving Thomas Müller, Sadio Mané and João Cancelo—returning to the Etihad after a loan spell—on the bench.
City had fought off interest from Bayern and other European giants to sign Haaland a year ago, and the 22‑year‑old delivered, despite a weak first‑half effort that was straight at goalkeeper Yann Sommer. Early on, Ruben Dias made a crucial block to prevent Jamal Musiala from giving Bayern the lead. Rodri then demonstrated his striking ability, curling a sumptuous left‑footed shot into the top corner from distance.
Bayern’s emergency signing of Sommer in January, after Manuel Neuer’s season‑ending skiing accident, proved vital. The Swiss keeper made several key saves, beginning with an outstretched leg to deny Ilkay Gündoğan. Leroy Sane, returning to the Etihad after four years at City, came close to haunting his former club twice around the break, flashing a wide shot before the interval and later being denied by two big saves from Ederson in the second half.
Bayern’s bright start to the second period was wasted as Matthijs de Ligt and Kingsley Coman had close‑range headers blocked by a desperate City defence. In the final quarter, City turned the screw. Haaland showed his all‑round game by delivering a perfectly weighted cross for Silva to head in City’s second goal. Sommer then made a fine low save to turn Julian Alvarez’s shot away. Haaland completed his brace with a telescopic leg finish from John Stones’ knockdown, sending the ball beyond Sommer. Alvarez’s subsequent effort was inches wide, and Sommer needed fingertip saves to turn Rodri’s header.
City’s 3‑0 lead puts them in a strong position for the return leg in Bavaria next week. Bayern will need one of the Champions League’s all‑time great comebacks in eight days if they hope to deny City a third consecutive semi‑final appearance.
