A Lagos State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba has ordered the remand of five individuals alleged to have been involved in kidnapping, murder and armed robbery. The defendants—Lateef Kazeem, Eric Adetola, Sanusi Momoh, Samuel Anuoluwapo and Adamson Olayinka—were arrested by the State Criminal Investigation Department for the kidnapping and killing of Emmanuel Ezeike in Abule Ado in January, for defrauding him of N2 million, and for robbing other victims.

The defendants were arraigned before Magistrate P. E. Nwaka on nine counts, including conspiracy, armed robbery, murder and kidnapping. Prosecutor Thomas Nurudeen told the court that the offences were committed in January and February 2023 in the Ojo and Abule Ado areas. He said the accused conspired with others, were armed with weapons, and kidnapped, killed and defrauded Ezeike. Nurudeen also alleged that, while armed with a gun, the defendants stole an iPhone belonging to Joel Ekeh, valued at N150,000, in the Egan area.

The prosecutor noted that the offences contravene Sections 287, 299, 297(B), 411 and 415 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015. The court did not accept the defendants’ pleas. Nurudeen requested that the accused be remanded in Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending advice from the Director of Public Prosecution. Magistrate Nwaka granted the request, ordering the defendants to be detained at Ikoyi Correctional Centre until the DPP’s advice is received. The case was adjourned to 5 May 2023.
