The authorities of Ekiti State University in Ado Ekiti have shut down the institution after students staged protests demanding a review of the late registration fee and other charges. On Tuesday morning, the students gathered in large numbers, carrying placards, to denounce the fees as unbearable and tantamount to extortion. They specifically condemned the N5,000 late registration fee, blocking the main gates and preventing both students and lecturers from entering the university.
Dotun Ogunsanya, the Students’ Union Government Public Relations Officer, described the fees as an extortion and added, “This is more worrisome especially that we do not enjoy any facility in the school. There has not been power supply within and outside the university premises for many years now.”
In response, EKSU Vice‑Chancellor Prof. Edward Olanipekun, on behalf of the university Senate, approved the suspension of academic activities for two weeks, effective Monday. Bode Olofinmuagun, Head of the Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs, issued a statement directing all students to vacate the campus immediately and to remain off the premises for the next two weeks.
