The Aghara community in Kabba‑Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State was thrown into mourning on Tuesday after gunmen stormed the village and abducted the traditional ruler and another person. The attack took place around 3 a.m. in the early hours of the day.
According to our correspondent, Toyin Onare, a domestic worker at the palace, was killed in the assault, while Chief David Obadofin, the village’s traditional ruler, and a man named Temidayo Elewa were abducted. Kogi State Police Command spokesman SP William Aya confirmed that the gunmen arrived at the palace at about 3 a.m., when residents were asleep, and opened fire indiscriminately. Chief Obadofin, a major cashew farmer, was seated on the front porch with one of his aides, enjoying the cool breeze, when the shooting began. Toyin, a widow who had gone to help on the farm, was shot and left to die. The attackers then seized Chief Obadofin and Temidayo, dragging them into the bush, while abandoning Toyin in a pool of blood. One witness managed to escape and relay the events.
Toyin’s body was taken to a hospital in Kabba, the headquarters of the LGA, about a 35‑minute drive away, where doctors confirmed she was dead on arrival. Upon learning of the incident, State Commissioner of Police Hekeem Yusuf deployed a tactical team to the area to apprehend the perpetrators and rescue the abducted victims, Aya said in a telephone interview with our correspondent.
