A 14‑year‑old secondary school student was killed and an unknown number of people were swept away in a flood that followed a heavy downpour in parts of Sagamu, Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogun State, on Tuesday. The affected communities include Ajaka, Express Junction, Ogunyanwo, Olayinka and Isale‑Ojumele. The teenager was identified by his school uniform as a student of Agbele Community High School. Eyewitnesses said he fell off a motorcycle that was being carried away by the floodwaters.

The flood also caused extensive property loss, with belongings worth millions of naira destroyed and several residents injured. In the Makun area, many possessions were ruined. Resident Banjo Adeoye lamented, “We had something like this last year and it was worse. We cried out to the government but help did not come. We don’t have a good drainage system on this axis. The water has nowhere to flow but to flood our houses. We thought the information from last year would help them plan well for this year, but here we are today. A boy lost his life; we don’t know how many motorcycles or properties we will have to look for.”

State Commissioner for Environment Ola Oresanya confirmed the incident on Wednesday after conducting an on‑site assessment of the affected areas. He said the state’s drainage master plan needs to be redesigned and announced that the government will begin implementing short, medium and long‑term solutions, including dredging canals and de‑silting blocked drains. Oresanya called on the Federal Government for assistance to address these perennial challenges.
