No fewer than seven people were burnt to death and 18 others sustained various injuries in an accident on the Lagos‑Ibadan Expressway on Thursday. The crash occurred a few metres after the Sapade Bridge in the Remo‑North local government area of Ogun State.
Florence Okpe, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Public Education Officer for the Ogun Command, confirmed the incident in a statement. She said a total of 28 persons were involved: 25 male adults, two female adults and one female child. Of those, 18 individuals—17 male adults and one female adult—were injured. Two vehicles were involved: a Toyota Sienna (registration BWR 762 PV) and a Mazda bus (registration BDN 18 LG).
Okpe explained that the suspected causes of the fatal crash were excessive speed and a route violation by the Sienna, which entered a one‑way street and collided with the Mazda bus, leading to a fire outbreak. The injured victims were taken to Victory Hospital in Ogere for medical attention, with some also sent to Idera Hospital in Sagamu. The bodies of the seven deceased were deposited at a private morgue in Ipara.
Sector Commander Ahmed Umar of the FRSC Ogun Sector Command cautioned motorists about the dangers of route violations and excessive speed, emphasizing that “human lives are important; therefore, motorists are advised to drive cautiously and consider other road users.” He also expressed condolences to the families of the victims and advised them to contact the FRSC office in Ogere for further information about the crash.
