The collation of results for the Adamawa governorship supplementary elections resumed late Saturday night, with data from ten councils confirming Governor Ahmadu Fintiri’s lead over his All Progressives Congress rival, Senator Aishatu Dahiru Binani. The exercise began at exactly 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, when the returning officers from Demsa and Yola South Local Government Areas presented their results at the collation centre. Subsequent collation of eight additional council areas showed Governor Fintiri extending his lead by 31,249 votes, winning in Demsa, Lamurde, Jada, Ganye, Song, Maiha, Hong and Shelleng. Senator Binani secured victories only in Yola North and Yola South.
The process was not without controversy. Journalists questioned whether Yunusa Ari, the Adamawa Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), had recused himself from overseeing the supplementary elections, as demanded by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP’s concerns stemmed from a leaked audio tape in which the REC appeared to ask an electoral officer in Fufore to assist “this woman,” casting doubt on his impartiality. Instead of the REC presiding, the state’s Administrative Secretary, Adamu Gujugu, issued the ground rules for the collation.
At the time of this report, the collated results from the ten councils placed Governor Fintiri firmly in pole position for the Dougirei Government House. He had amassed 3,881 votes out of the 37,016 votes contested in the supplementary polls, while Senator Binani had garnered 2,527 votes. Collation was scheduled to resume at 11 a.m. on Sunday, after the embattled REC, Barrister Yunusa Ari, announced a suspension of the process upon his surprise return to supervise the supplementary polls.
