On Saturday, April 15, African Union Commission Chairman Amb. Moussa Faki Mahamat called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan after intense fighting erupted between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the capital, Khartoum. In a statement, the AU Commission said Mahamat has been closely monitoring the situation with deep concern and is urging political, civilian and military actors to seek a consensual solution to the crisis triggered by the October 25 coup and its damaging consequences.
The AU warned that tensions have “dangerously out of control” and that armed violence has become the predominant means of resolving political disputes. “The AUC Chairperson makes a fervent appeal to all parties, the armed forces and the rapid intervention forces, in particular, to immediately stop the destruction of the country, the panic of the populations and the bloodbaths of the innocents in the last ten days of the holy month of Ramadan,” the statement read.
Shooting and explosions were reported on Saturday near Sudan’s army headquarters, the defence ministry in central Khartoum, the presidential palace and the airport, according to Al Jazeera. Mahamat also called on international actors to exercise restraint and help restore stability. “At this moment of extreme gravity, the Chairperson of the AUC urges all components of the international community to combine, in unity and urgency, their efforts to bring the parties to immediately cease military actions and return to the negotiating table for a satisfactory exit from the crisis for all,” the statement added.
