Barely ten months after a terrorist attack on a Catholic church in Owo, Ondo State, the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, presented several security patrol vehicles to the state police command to help combat insecurity in the area. The attack on St. Francis’ Catholic Church on Sunday, 5 June 2022, left 41 worshippers dead and at least 69 injured. In handing over the vehicles to the Owo Police Division on Friday, the first‑class monarch urged the Federal Government to take steps that will prevent similar incidents in the community and throughout the state.
Oba Ogunoye explained that the vehicles were donated by the World Council of Owo Association in the United States to strengthen local security operations. “Last year we experienced something we had never faced before,” he said. “The attacker fled, and although some suspects have been arrested, the police lack mobility in Owo. I had warned about the problem and asked our sons and daughters for assistance. I requested two vehicles, but they provided four to enhance security here. We believe these vehicles will be put to good use and will go a long way in curbing crime and criminal activities around Owo.”
Mr. Idris Adenishin, a former president of the association, confirmed that the group responded to the monarch’s request. “We were aware of the security challenges the police face in Owo, especially the shortage of vehicles. We met and decided to provide these vehicles to support the police,” he stated.
