The Nigeria Police Force announced on Sunday that it had arrested Islamic cleric Ahmed Atilade after a video surfaced showing him threatening to kill police officers who stopped his vehicle for routine checks and questioning in Ibadan, Oyo State, in February.

CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force’s Public Relations Officer, said in a statement that Atilade had been charged and would be arraigned in court. According to Adejobi, “On Saturday, February 4, 2023, while on stop‑and‑search duty along the Ibadan Expressway, Oyo State, Ahmed Atilade, 28, assaulted and threatened to kill the police officers who stopped his vehicle for routine checks and questioning.”

He added that Atilade was arrested and charged on Thursday, February 9, 2023. “We will not allow any individual to undermine and ridicule our officers and, by extension, our policing system in Nigeria,” Adejobi said. “We have a lot of responsibilities as citizens of this country to respect our law‑enforcement officers who work day and night to ensure the security of our nation. We will do everything possible to defend our officers who carry out their duties diligently and legally from being harassed or attacked by any individual or group of persons.”
