The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Aviation, has issued a strong plea to aviation unions to end their ongoing strike, which has caused immense disruption to air travel across the country. The government also expressed displeasure at the unions’ continued warning strike despite efforts to meet workers’ demands.
In a statement, Odutayo Oluseyi, Head of Press and Public Relations for the ministry, said the strike is unnecessary and will increase hardship for citizens, affect flight schedules, lead to economic losses, and damage Nigeria’s global rating. Speaking on behalf of Minister of Aviation Hadi Sirika, Oluseyi noted that the grievances prompting the strike should not lead to industrial action. She added that the planned demolition of certain buildings obstructing the runway is a public‑interest, administrative issue that can be resolved internally.
The statement further urged the unions to have met with agency management to arrange alternative accommodation for all affected offices before initiating the strike. Regarding airport concessions, Oluseyi said the unions are aware of global practices and that concessions are essential for making Nigeria’s aviation industry a hub in Africa, improving infrastructure and ensuring airports are economically viable without loss of jobs.
On conditions of service in some agencies, Oluseyi described the matter as a work in progress. The National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission is already conducting assessments and will conclude soon. She also reminded the unions that the consequential adjustment of the minimum wage has been finalized and will be paid shortly, a point repeatedly communicated in meetings with the unions.
The Ministry of Aviation’s management remains open to continuous engagement with the unions to improve their welfare, but only in an atmosphere of peace and mutual respect. Oluseyi warned that any behavior by a union that threatens law and order at the airports will be taken seriously. The ministry reiterated its appeal for the unions to call off the strike and collaborate with management to make the aviation industry a hub in Africa.
