The National Bureau of Statistics released its Rail Transportation Data for the third and fourth quarters of 2022 in Abuja on Tuesday, revealing a sharp decline in revenue for the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). In Q3 2022, passenger revenue fell to N715.09 million, a 60.52 percent drop from the N1.81 billion recorded in the same period of 2021. Revenue from goods and cargo also decreased, falling to N101.84 million in Q3 2022, down 7.04 percent from N109.56 million in Q3 2021. By contrast, other receipts surged, rising 707.31 percent to N14.61 million in Q3 2022.
The report showed a corresponding decline in traffic volumes. The number of rail passengers in Q3 2022 fell by 500,348 to 696,841, a 28.20 percent decrease from the previous year. Goods transported also dropped, with 33,312 tonnes moved in Q3 2022 compared with 51,726 tonnes in Q3 2021.
In Q4 2022, passenger revenue rebounded to N1.15 billion, though it remained 39.54 percent lower than the N1.91 billion earned in Q4 2021. Revenue from goods rose sharply to N157.23 million, up 63.56 percent from N96.13 million in the same quarter of the previous year. Other income receipts increased dramatically, reaching N382.17 million—a 3,316.18 percent rise from N11.19 million in Q4 2021.
Passenger numbers improved in Q4 2022, climbing 30.10 percent from 1.03 million in Q4 2021 to 1.34 million. The volume of goods transported, however, fell slightly by 1.50 percent. On an annual basis, the NRC saw an 18.36 percent increase in the total number of passengers.
