Travellers were over the weekend stranded on the Akure-Ore highway following the protest embarked upon by students of Adeyemi College of Education, Ondo State.
The students were outraged over the campus’s lack of water and electricity in the past few months.
The students, in their numbers who stormed the highway, accused the institution’s management of not showing concern about their welfare.
Following the development, motorists had to take alternative routes through Ondo town to continue their journey.
The students were said to have stormed the streets and halted vehicular movement for several hours.
According to one of the students, who gave her name as Modupe, “we were treated unfairly despite the huge levies being collected from us.”
Many of the students came out with empty buckets and used them to block the highway to show the lack of water in their hostels.
They vowed to continue the protest until the school’s management found solutions to the water scarcity and lack of electricity on the campus.
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force who were drafted to the scene were on ground to prevent possible breakdown of law and order.
When contacted, the college spokesman, Oluseto Olatuyipe, disclosed, “Management is working on the issues raised.”
