Mourinho reveals he snubbed chance to become Ronaldo’s new coach

Roma manager, Jose Mourinho, has claimed he turned down the opportunity to become the next head coach of Portugal.

According to the 59-year-old, he was the Portuguese Football Federation’s first choice for the job.

Mourinho revealed he was approached by PFP president Fernando Gomes before Roberto Martinez was eventually appointed.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss says he “decided not to go”.

“The fact that the president of the FPF said that I was not his first choice, but his only choice makes me proud.

“But I decided not to go. I’m here and that’s what matters,” Mourinho said.

Martinez replaces Fernando Santos, who took Portugal to the 2022 World Cup.

Santo famously fell out with captain Cristiano Ronaldo, who he dropped from the starting XI for their last two fixtures at the tournament.
